First Section – the Positive Commandments
3. It is a positive commandment to love the blessed G-d with all your heart, all of your soul, and all of your possessions.
As it states in Devarim (Deuteronomy) 6:5: “You shall love Hashem, your G-d, with all of your heart, all of your soul, and all of your possessions”. The way to love Him is when we think about all of His actions until we comprehend Him to the best of our ability, then the heart will become inflamed with a love for Him. This is the love that we are obligated in and a person should place all of his thoughts on loving our blessed G-d. And no man can love G-d except through knowledge and from this knowledge the love for Him comes: if a little (knowledge), then a little (love) – if a lot (of knowledge), then a lot (of love). Therefore, a man has to connect himself to understand and comprehend with wisdom and understanding of the honor of his Maker, to the extent of his ability to understand and realize.
And this is among the commandments that a person is obligated to fulfill at all times and at every moment. And included in this commandment is to bring other people closer to the service of G-d and to make him beloved by His creatures, like Avraham (Abraham), our father, of blessed memory, as it states in Bereshis (Genesis) 12:5: “And the souls that he made in Charan”. And because of this, Hashem called him “Ahavo” (His beloved) as it states in Yeshaya (Isaiah) 41:8: “Avraham, My beloved”.
