The Gemara in Sanhedrin quotes a halachah that one cannot enter a Bais Midrash with a weapon. The source of this halachah is a passuk in Parshas Balak. The passuk states, “Pinchas stood up from the congregation and took a dagger in his hand,” implying that until then, he did not have his weapon.
