Dvar Halacha On Parshat Masei 07 23 2014-5774

Do to their extra kedusha, the Leviim had their own cities, separate from the rest of Klal Yisroel. In this week’s Parsha, the Yerushalmi learns that it was forbidden to bury the dead even immediately outside of the Levit cities. The passuk says, “Their surrounding areas is for their domesticated animals, their possessions, and all their non-domesticated animals (chayos).” The word “chayos” also means life. From here Chaza”l learn that the Levite cities were only for the living, and not for burying the dead,
