Chaza”l tell us that it is assur to enter Har Habayis with one’s staff, shoes, or dust on one’s feet. The source of this Halacha is in Parahas Shmos with the famous event of the “burning bush.” Hashem commands Moshe Rabbeinu to remove his shoes since the earth he was standing on was “holy land.” Since the Bais HaMikdash is also holy land, one must remove his shoes before entering.
