Dvar Halacha On Parshat Shmos 12 16 2013 – 5774

The passuk in Parshas Shmos states, “And she gave birth to a son and called his name Gershom, because he said, ‘I was a stranger (ger) in a foriegn land.” Chazal in Shmos Rabbah learn from here that the way of the righteous is to give a name to a child based on the circumstances and events surrounding their birth. As there are many opinions regarding this subject, one should consult with their Rov as to the implications of this Midrash.
