Negative Commandment #46

Sefer Ha’mitzvos Ha’Katzar (The concise book of mitzvos) By the Chofetz Chaim

This book lists the Torah mitzvos that can be observed today

Second Section – the Negative Commandments

46. It is a negative commandment “Do not curse one’s Father or Mother.”

As it states in Shemos (Exodus) 21:17, “A person that curses his father or his mother shall be put to death.” If he curses his father or mother using the Name of G-d, he deserves the death penalty of stoning. This is true even if he curses them after their death. If he curses them with a characteristic name of G-d, he is whipped. One should not make his father swear by using a curse. Nor should he be the messenger from a court to excommunicate him. It is forbidden to embarrass one’s parents, because anyone that embarrasses his father or his mother, even by a hint, is cursed from the Mouth of the Almighty, as it states in Devarim (Deuteronomy) 27:17, “Cursed is the one that dishonors his father or his mother.”

This applies in all places and at all times, for men and for women.
