Negative Commandment #90

Sefer Ha’mitzvos Ha’Katzar (The concise book of mitzvos) By the Chofetz Chaim

This book lists the Torah mitzvos that can be observed today

Second Section – the Negative Commandments

90. It is a negative commandment “do not eat a limb from a live animal”

As it states in Devarim (Deuteronomy) 12:23, “do not eat the soul with the meat.” By Oral Tradition it is learned that this means not to eat a limb separated from a live animal. If a person eats an olive size amount from a live animal, he receives lashes. Even if he eats a full limb – if it is an olive size amount, he receives lashes. If it is less than an olive size amount, he is exempt from punishment [but it is still forbidden]. If he eats a limb from a living animal and flesh from a living animal, he transgresses two negative commandments (one is for ‘do not eat the soul with the meat’ and the other is ‘do not eat unkosher flesh in the field – Shemos (Exodus) 22:30).

This applies in all places and at all times, for men and for women
